I-LYA' s basic purpose is the protection and promotion of the interests of
boat owners and water sports fans in the enjoyment of their sport.
At the top level, I-LYA
works hand-in-hand with the United States Sailing Association and class racing
associations in developing fair and workable rules.
I-LYA is the appeals
body for race protests in its area
I-LYA officers and
committeemen are available to help its member clubs with boating related
problems
I-LYA has a
permanent yachting display at the Museum of the Great Lakes Historical Society
in Vermilion, Ohio, and the Lake Erie Historical Society Museum at Put-in-Bay.
I-LYA is the
watchdog for proposed legislation that may affect yachting and yachtsmen.
I-LYA serves as a
clearing house for yachting information.
I-LYA is the leader
in generating junior sail racing in the Midwest. Its Junior Race Week is a
model for others allover the country. The 6 winning skippers and crew of the
I-LYA Junior Champion- ship are awarded $400 scholarships to the college of
their choice. Second place finishers are awarded $200 scholarships. These
scholarships are a gift from the Yachtsmen's Fund.
I-LYA is the leader
in developing future power , boaters with its Powerboat Junior Leadership
Training and Navigational Contests, with the winner receiving a $40Q
Scholarship from the Yachtsmen's Fund.
I-LYA established a
foundation, the Yachtsmen's Fund, to support training, education and junior
activities
Membership in I-LYA
assures recognition among other clubs
Every member of an
I-LYA member club is automatically a member of l-LYA.
Member clubs are
represented by delegates to I - LYA, who meet twice annually. Spring and Fall
meetings are held in the vicinity of the incumbent Commodore. Class advisory,
cruise and powerboa1 committees meet prior to the delegate meeting, giving an
open forum for class improvement and rules enlightenment. Delegates elect flag
officers and trustees at the Fall meeting.
I-LYA appoints 3
delegates to U.S. Sailing, 5 delegates to the Yacht Racing Union of the Great
Lakes, 2 delegates to the Boating Association of Ohio, and a delegate each to
WLECA and the National Club Association.
I-LYA's annual
regatta is held at Put-in-Bay, on South Bass Island, in western Lake Erie,
site of the historic naval battle of the War of 1812. It draws over 300
sailing craft and 150 power boats.
I-LYA's membership
includes both Canadian and American clubs making for strong international
competition.
I-LYA business is
conducted through the office of its Executive Secretary.
I-LYA seeks
corporate sponsorship to improve its services and control costs. |
